Third Graders on Google Docs

by Mawi on August 30, 2012

I was speaking at the White Bear Lake, MN District Convocation earlier this week and had the good fortune of speaking to their teacher of the year. She told me how her third graders open up their own Google Docs, share them with her, and get going typing. I was pretty impressed since Mawi Learning (like many small businesses) runs everything – email, documents, spreadsheets, accounting – through Google Docs.

My oldest daughter, a 4th grade student at Hawthorne Elementary School in Elmhurst, Illinois, participates in a private-access blog (kidblog.org) with her language arts classmates. They post responses to questions about their reading assignments, play word games, and engage in conversations about class discussions. All posts are approved by their teacher before appearing on the blog. It’s amazing to see how our children are learning how to communicate in groups online. This is great practice for using social media appropriately both in the personal and professional settings. I am thrilled to see my school educating my children in this way.
